Collaboration with LearningWorks YouthBuild Raises 3-sided Shed at Turkey Hill Farm

Turkey Hill Farm now has a 3-sided shed to store miscellaneous tools and equipment, thanks to an incredible collaboration with LearningWorks YouthBuild (LWYB). This program based in Portland provides teens and young adults who have struggled in the traditional education system with hands-on opportunities to learn marketable skills and certifications to help transition to adulthood. Their team provided many hours of construction throughout this past winter. CELT’s stewardship program has needed this new shed for some time and we’re grateful for the help getting it done.

CELT and LearningWorks began discussions about the opportunity for this project during summer 2023. Their learners have constructed a range of buildings for a variety of organizations since 1994, from dog houses to full-sized human houses, so this 3-walled, open, lean-to structure was mid-sized when considering their project range. We collaborated to confirm the design plan, CELT received the building permit in October 2023, and construction began!

Throughout the next few months, the shed started coming together. First, the foundations were measured and spaced correctly. Then, the lumber was attached to assemble the frame. Work continued through the winter season, with notable progress each month.

By late February, they started constructing the walls. In mid-March, the roof had been installed and the construction project was now complete!

Many thanks to LearningWorks, especially Ted Freeman, Nate Snow, and all of the student learners who spent hours constructing this new shed. This will be a fantastic help for our spring cleaning this spring. We hope to continue this partnership for future construction needs — thanks again for sharing your willingness, your expertise, your time, and your efforts this season.
