While the COVID-19 shutdown has forced us to cancel our usual spring work weekends, volunteers have been working as individuals and small groups to tackle some of the most pressing invasive species problems on our properties. Last weekend, volunteers spread out around Pollack Brook Preserve to apply “mechanical controls” — cutting, ripping, and pulling out — to ornamental bittersweet and more.
Invasive plants like these grow all over Cape Elizabeth, often crowding out native plants and encroaching on habitats for native wildlife. Spring is the best time for removal work because the wet weather and recent snowmelt keep soil soft and workable. In addition, the absence of leaves on most plants makes it easier to find and reach central stalks and root systems.
Our stewardship team is always looking for volunteers – especially those who are willing and able to safely work outside during the shutdown. Please submit a volunteer form or email us if you are interested in joining the team.
