Our Summer Stewardship Assistant started a few weeks ago in mid-June. Berkeley Brown has been working with our staff and volunteers on a range of projects related to land stewardship so far this season, including removing invasive species, refreshing signage, leading work parties and walks on our CELT properties.
Berkeley grew up in Watertown, CT and moved to Maine for college. He is currently studying Wildlife Ecology and Forest Ecosystem Sciences at the University of Maine in Orono. He has always loved nature and animals of all kinds and fell in love with Maine, particularly its forests, as soon as he visited for the first time during high school.
In Orono, he is a member of the school’s chapter of The Wildlife Society and on the executive board for his fraternity, Alpha Delta, with which he organizes and supervises the chapter’s philanthropy, mostly consisting of managing the school’s mascot, Bananas T Bear. In his free time you can almost always find him in the woods exploring, listening to birdsong, or trying to grab herps (amphibians & reptiles). Protecting and ensuring that forests, and other incredible pieces of nature, continue to be accessible for future generations is one of Berkeley’s biggest goals and motivators. He is excited to explore a part of Maine that is new to him and to get to know the wonderful community surrounding it. Say hi when you see him around this summer and you can reach out to him directly at berkeley@capelandtrust.org. Welcome to the team!
